According to Ormrod, SQ4R is a new way in which students can study. It allows the students to have a concrete way in which the teacher expects them to do their work. Students have long tried to figure out the most effective ways in which to study, The hope of the new method, is that it now allows students, who may not always be the best at studying, to now have an effective way to study material.

So what is SQ4R? Let's take a look:

S- Survey the chapter.
The same way that people can survey land, a reader can survey a chapter.
Start by reading the introduction and conclusion
Scan the titles of the subsections to get an idea of the main points
Q- Questioning!
Questioning as the reader reads the section help retain information
The reader should turn these bold words, and headlines into questions that they anticipate they might see on an exam
Decide whether or not it would be worth it to read the section in detail or skim it
1R- Read the section.
Look for the answers to the questions you made in the previous step as you read
Take notes and highlight when you come across the answer
Become an active reader opposed to a passive one
2R- Recite your answers loud and proud!
This helps the reader remember important information from the chapter
Answer the questions in the reader's own words
If the reader has difficulty, they should look at their notes and highlighted words
The goal is to answer the questions noteless
When the reader understands the section and can answer her/her question, he/she should continue the Q, 1R, 2R pattern for the rest of the chapter.
3R- Relate new material.
Relate any new and unfamiliar material to material that they have already mastered
Take note of what information agrees and conflicts with his/her previous knowledge
Organize the new information in a way that makes sense
4R- Review.
Review and quiz yourself on the new information
Skim over the chapter again
Frequently revisit the notes taken
Reviewing is the most essential to retain the information
The "4R"'s may differ a little bit from source to source, however, the goal of all of them is to make the reader an active one. SQ4R is an excellent way to help kids learn how to study. Students who are unfamiliar with studying, or identify themselves as "bad at studying", can thrive with having a concrete way in which they are expected to learn the material.
tl;dr
But does SQ4R actually work?
Research says yes! Not only does it improve the students’ reading comprehension, but it also improves classroom behavior. The improved comprehension and meaningful organization of a text allows students to understand the text, so they pay attention and participate more during the classroom because the discussion/lesson has meaning.
